The Division of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine at UCSF has a long and distinguished history. Over the past five decades, UCSF has been a major source of leaders and investigators in nephrology at academic centers throughout the United States. For example, graduates of our fellowship program have recently been or are currently Division Chiefs at Harbor-UCLA (Dr. Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh), UC Davis (Dr. Burl Don), UC Irvine (Dr. Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh), UCLA (Dr. Ira Kurtz), UC San Diego (Dr. Joachim Ix). And the immediate past Chief of Nephrology at Stanford, Dr. Glenn Chertow, is a former UCSF faculty member.

Our mission continues in this tradition: expanding the frontiers of basic and clinical investigation in kidney disease, training the next generation of academic nephrology leaders and providing the highest level of patient care. Our division within and the UCSF School of Medicine overall provides a premier academic environment.

UCSF has been the top NIH-funded School of Medicine for the ten out of the past eleven years.1

According to U.S. News and World Report (USNWR), for the final seven years when Nephrology was considered separately, UCSF Nephrology was ranked #3-#8 nationally (in some years, we were the highest ranked subspecialty at UCSF).2 UCSF’s School of Medicine remains the only school that is ranked in the top five for training in both research and primary care by the latest USNWR survey.3 A recent survey recognized UCSF as having one of the top three internal medicine residency programs in the country.4
